Operating Systems
At various times I ave worked with almost every operating system up to OS/390 that can run on an IBM or compatible mainframe. Having been working in this field since 1976, I have worked on the earliest operating systems for the 370 architecture and almost everyone since. In many cases I have also been part of the migration team bringing the system to new system and of course many release upgrades also. Some of the core systems (add-ons not listed) I have worked with are. VM, VM/SP, MFT, MVT, VS1, SVS, MVS 3.6 and 3.8 vanilla, MVS/SE1, MVS/SE2, MVS/SP1, MVS/SP3, MVS/ESA and OS/390.
Some of the upgrades I have gone through are:
- MVT(heavily customized) to SVS
- MVT(heavily customized) to MVS 3.8
- VS1 to MVS/SP1
- SVS to MVS 3.8
- MVS 3.8 to MCS/SE1 then SE2 then SP1 then SP3
- VM Rel 3 (heavily modified) to VM rel 6
- Setting up the MVS side of a Boroughs(A2) to IBM/MVS conversion. This included basic operating system and then defining and them implementing storage management standards.
- Disaster recovery (data center flooded) during a major data center expansion and hardware/software upgrade. End result was a new configuration, in record time, including hardware and software, that was actually done with the pending upgrades, ahead of schedule.
- DOS/VSE to VS1
I am also familiar with the desktop world. While my preferred platform is the Macintosh. I also use UNIX flavors (Linux and FreeBSD) on a regular basis and am familiar with Windows although not a guru.
