I have been involved with storage management starting with when it was just one of the many functions of a systems programming department to when it had its own dedicated department. In the beginning we wrote extensions to IEHDASD and DF/DSS to automate the execution and tracking of backups and modern options of a full fledged storage management solutions such as DF/SMS, HSM, FDR/ABR and DMS/OS.

In one client I worked with a small team in setting the storage management system and standards from scratch. Their previous system had been a Boroughs A2 and they were converting to the IBM/MVS world.
